History

1902-1949

The company was founded in 1902 by Charles Edward Johnson (1870-1950). Johnson is a Swedish immigrant and a graduate of the University of Texas Law School. The company's first office is located at 131 Ã,½ West Grand. The Westin Hotel stands at this location today.

In 1903, Albert P. Crockett (1871-1918) joined the practice of Johnson, forming the company's first partnership. Judge Benjamin F. Burwell (1866-1916) joined the company in 1907 and the name changed to Burwell, Crockett & amp; Johnson. Judge Burwell began practicing law in Oklahoma in 1891. In 1898, he served as Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal for the Oklahoma Territory, a position he held from 1898 to statehood in 1907. Judge Burwell died in 1916 and John Embry (1869-1960) former US Attorney for the state of Oklahoma joined the company. Company name changed to Embry, Crockett & amp; Johnson. In 1918, Crockett died and Chester P. Kidd joined the firm. Company name changed to Embry, Johnson & amp; Kidd.

In 1922, Kidd retired due to illness. That same year, Raymond A. Tolbert (1890-1960), joined the company. Company name changed to Embry, Johnson & amp; Tolbert. Tolbert will act as the Managing Partner of the company until his death. In 1929, Vincil Penny Crowe (1897-1974), former Assistant Attorney General for the State of Oklahoma, joined the company and the name became Embry, Johnson, Crowe & Tolbert. The First National Building was completed in 1932 and the Company moved into Suite 640 in the southeast corner of Parks and Robinson. Company name changed to Embry, Johnson, Crowe, Tolbert & amp; Shelton in 1943 when Troy Shelton became the newest partner.

1950-1980

In 1950, the company's founder, Charles Edward Johnson, died. In 1951, the company name changed again this time to include a new partner, and Embry's son-in-law, Calvin P. Boxley (1901-1966). The company is known as Embry, Johnson, Crowe, Tolbert & amp; Boxley. Although he died in 1950, Johnson's name remained part of the company's name until 1953. That year the name of Charles Edward Johnson was crossed out of the company's name and the name Bruce H. Johnson added. Both Johnsons are unrelated and the company becomes Embry, Crowe, Tolbert, Boxley & amp; Johnson. In 1959, Vivian Diffendaffer became the first female lawyer to work at Crowe & amp; Dunlevy.

John Embry and Raymond A. Tolbert both died in 1960, and Fred W. Dunlevy (4/19/1914-9/13/1994), C. Harold Thweatt and John W. Swinford all became partners. In 1961, the company's name became Crowe, Boxley, Dunlevy, Thweatt, Swinford & amp; Johnson. The new partner is nothing new for the company; Dunlevy joined the company in 1937, Thweatt joined in 1944 and Swinford joined in 1946. Calvin P. Boxley died in 1966 and in 1968 the company's name became Crowe, Dunlevy, Thweatt, Swinford, Johnson & Burdick to include Ben L. Burdick, a new partner who has been with the firm since 1947. In 1979, the moniker 'A Professional Corporation,' was added to the company name.

1981-present

In 1981, the company's name was last converted to Crowe & amp; Dunlevy, Professional Company. That same year, the firm moved to the Mid-America Tower (now known as Continental Oil Center) in the southeast corner of Main and Broadway. The company name has remained the same ever since. To meet the needs of its growing client base, Crowe & amp; Dunlevy opened the Tulsa office in 1989 and a Norman office in 1991. Norman's office has been closed.
