Ivan S. Fisher (born 1943) is a prominent criminal defense lawyer in New York City. He represents white-collar clients and others who are targeted or charged in complicated federal affairs. In 1980, The New York Times enrolled him in the top five criminal lawyers in New York City and in a separate article described him as "one of the country's most wanted and costly criminal lawyers." The New Yorker calls it one of "Manhattan's leading lawyers". John Kroger, former Oregon Attorney General and current president of Reed College, calls Fisher "one of the country's premier defenders... and without question, brilliant court lawyers." Fisher has received many awards including being invited to handle the United States Federal Judicial Conference.

Early life and education
Fisher attended Horace Mann School, Syracuse University, and Boston University Law School. Early in his career he was a partner of Albert Krieger; Fisher established his own practice in 1974.

As a young lawyer, Fisher represents the writer Jack Henry Abbott in a murder trial in what many people call a "decade trial" and is a counsel for Joseph Bonanno also known as "Joey Bananas", Bonanno's crime family boss. One of his clients was Marie Luisi, Senior Vice President at J. Walter Thompson, amid allegations relating to the alleged theft of $ 30 million and Lowell Birrell, an oil executive and financier in the biggest white collar prosecution at the time. Fisher also represents the finances of Michele Sindona of Italy, serving as the principal adviser in the Connection Trial Court, the longest federal criminal proceeding in US history and the French Court of Justice.
On May 15, 1974, Fisher won an important decision in the Court of Appeals at Circuit 2, USA vs. Toscanino, essentially rejecting a Supreme Court ruling that hinders the review of American law against US law enforcement. The direct result of the decision was the order of Foreign Minister Henry Kissinger to every US embassy in the world that directed all American personnel not to participate in torture.
In recent years, Fisher has guaranteed the dismissal of charges accusing corruption and related offenses filed against Roy L. Schneider, M.D., former governor of the US Virgin Islands. He also won the release at the Demetrios Demetrios trial, which allegedly had illegally traded with "black countries." Fisher represents the Pashtun tribal billionaire and politician Haji Ayub Afridi, whose jurisdiction covers the province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan; Job Afridi has had a long and complicated relationship with the United States, including the prosecution brought to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
Recently, Fisher defended Alberto Vilar, a billionaire investor and philanthropist who heads asset management company Amerindo Investment Advisors, against the cost of securities fraud brought by the US Attorney's Office in the Southern District of New York. Fisher also gave advice to Haji Bashir Noorzai, whose prosecution and subsequent belief by the US government have raised significant issues involving US foreign policy. In 2009, Fisher represented the General Counsel of a major telecommunication company with allegations of stock options retreating.
Fisher has often been profiled in major publications such as Time Magazine, The New York Times, The National Law Journal, and The New York Law Journal. He often teaches at leading universities including Yale Law School and Columbia Law School in criminal defense and is widely known as an expert in cross-examination. Fisher is also regularly called on to provide legal commentary on national television.
In 2012 Fisher is suspended from a New York federal court for violating fiduciary responsibilities to clients. On March 14, 2013, the US District Court complaints committee in Manhattan forbade Fisher to practice in front of the court, based on the committee's findings that Fisher had been depositing money improperly from clients that Fisher should have used to pay back to third parties.. He can still practice in New York State.
