Initial work

Not wanting to stay in a "normal career", Hamm moved to Los Angeles permanently during 1995 with a car and $ 150. He moved into a house with four other actors and started working as a waitress while attending an audition. He acted in the theater, including as Flavius in the production of Shakespeare Timon of Athens with the Holy Fools Theater Company.

Hamm continues to work as a waitress and, briefly, as the set designer for softcore pornography films. After repeatedly failing to get a promising role, Hamm set his 30th birthday as a deadline for success in Hollywood, stating:

You either suck it up and find another agent, or you go home and say you tried it, but that's the end. The last thing I want to be here is one 45 year old actor, with a weak understanding of their own reality, and not really working hard. So I gave myself five years. I said, if I could not do it by the time I was 30 years old, I was in the wrong place. And as soon as I say that, it feels like I'm starting to work right away.

During 2000, Hamm gained the role of romantic firefighter Burt Ridley in the drama series NBC Providence . His one episode contract grew to 19, and allowed him to stop from the waiting table.
