Martha Stark is an American politician, former Financial Commissioner of New York City. A tax lawyer, he served as Financial Commissioner at Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Cabinet from 2002 to 2009. He previously worked for Manhattan Borough President, served as a White House Member in the US Department of State and for the Treasury before commissioning. On 28 April 2009 Stark submitted his resignation due to an investigation of his actions.
In January 2007, he filed an appeal to the New York State Legislature for the election of the New York State Supervisory office, following the resignation of former Financial Supervisor Alan Hevesi. He testified before the Legislature and the search committee and was selected as one of three finalists by a search committee composed of former State Supervisory Edward Regan, former State Supervisory Commissioner Carl McCall and former New York City Financial Controller Harrison J. Goldin. Chairman of the State Council of Sheldon Silver, annoyed that a member of the Assembly is not on the finalist list, announces that the new financial superintendent will not be out of the finalist list and will become an assembly.
