Noma D. Gurich (born September 26, 1952) is an American lawyer and judge serving as Supreme Court Judge of Oklahoma. Gurich was named the highest court of the State by Oklahoma's Governor Brad Henry in 2010 and assumed office on February 15, 2011. Gurich was appointed to the Court following the death of Judge Marian P. Opala. Gurich is the third woman in the country's history to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

Biography

Gurich was born in South Bend, Indiana. He received a bachelor's degree in political science in 1975 from Indiana State University and Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1978. He was a lawyer in private practice in Oklahoma City ten years later when Republican Governor Henry Bellmon appointed him a Compensatory Court Judge Oklahoma Workers. He was reappointed for a second term to the court by Democratic Governor David Walters in 1994.

In July 1998, the Governor of the Frank Keating Republic appointed Gurich as District Court Judge for the District of Oklahoma, a position that was re-elected in 2002, 2006 and 2010. While serving as District Judge, Gurich served as Chief Judge of both. The 11th and 12th Junior Attorney General (2007-2008 and 2009-2010) on the orders of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Oklahoma. In January 2011, following the death of Justice Marian P. Opala, Democratic Governor Brad Henry appointed Gurch to the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

Gurich married John E. Miley, General Counsel for the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission. Judge Gurich and her husband have been married for 17 years.

Education

Gurich attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. He graduated with a major in Political Science and a minor in History, received a B.A. Magna Cum Laude's Degree. He continued his education by attending the University of Oklahoma College of Law in Norman, Oklahoma, receiving a Juris Doctorate degree with a difference in 1978.

While in law school, Gurich was elected by the votes of his colleagues to receive the Professional Responsibility Award, and served as a student judge at the University of Oklahoma Superior Court. He also serves as Research Editor for the Overview of American Indian Law.

Throughout law school, Gurich maintains work with a number of organizations. Gurich works on campus as a student government association, and as a member of the Student Law Research Council. In 1976, Gurich served as a student assistant to the US Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma, working under the acting US Attorney John E. Green.

Personal practice

After graduating from law school, Gurich Justice was accepted at the Oklahoma Bar Association on October 13, 1978. Originally, Gurich was hired as an associate attorney with Cheek and Cheek law firm in Oklahoma City. In 1982, he joined the firm of Abowitz & amp; Welch, in Oklahoma City, with whom he became a partner. Her personal practice experiences include defending cases of negligence and lawsuits, product liability cases, anti-trust cases, securities fraud cases, contract cases, worker compensation and general practice.

Judicial career

Workers' Compensation Court

Gurich Justice has the distinction of receiving nominations to fill vacancies by four separate Oklahoma Governors, with two of them being Republican and two as Democrats.

In 1988, Gurich was appointed to serve as Judge at the Workers' Compensation Court by Oklahoma Governor Henry Bellmon. While sitting in the Workers' Compensation Court, Gurich was appointed by Governor Bellmon to serve as Chief Judge for two terms: January 1989 - December 1992. Gurich was reappointed to court for a six-year term by Oklahoma Governor David Walters. He remains in this position until he is nominated to serve as a judge in the Oklahoma District Court District.

District Court

Gurich began his career as District Judge on July 1, 1998. In accordance with Oklahoma court proceedings, he was nominated by the Oklahoma Judicial Nomination Commission and officially appointed by Governor Frank Keating to fill the remaining retirement of a district judge.

After his appointment, Gurich was elected in 1998 to remain in his position as District Judge for the Oklahoma District. She was re-elected in 2002, 2006 & amp; 2010 without a fight. In this capacity, Gurich served as Presidential Administrative Judge for Judicial District 7 from January 2003 to December 31, 2004.

Supreme Court

In 2001, after receiving commission recommendations, Gurich was again nominated by the Oklahoma Judicial Nomination Commission to fill vacancies in the Supreme Court of Oklahoma, following the death of Judge Marian Opala on October 11, 2010. He was sworn in on March 31, 2011 to serve as the third woman in the Supreme Court Oklahoma. Justice Gurich sworn by fellow Judge, Yvonne Kauger.
