This article includes "medical misuse", which has the same meaning but is more specifically related to harmful medical treatments than general treatment, and may include non-voting victims.

Patient abuse or ignore is an action or failure to act that causes unusual suffering, misery, or danger to the patient.

  • Abuse includes physically attacking or sexually assaulting a patient. It also includes intentional cuts of necessary food, physical care, and medical attention.
  • Ignore includes failure to meet the needs and care of the patient, or the cause of the injury to an unintentional patient, whether by acts or omissions.

Abuse and negligence of the patient may occur in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and during home-based care.
