He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1975, and attended the University of West Virginia, where he became a member of the Alpha Xi Delta torch club, and from there he graduated with a B.A. in journalism in 1978. Killing girls

After the killing of JonBenÃÆ'Â © at the family home in December 1996, Boulder law enforcement officials stated that Patsy and her husband were "under the umbrella of suspicion" because of their possible involvement in the crime. The couple spent the next 10 years defending themselves against the allegations by insisting that an intruder kill their daughter. No allegations were made against anyone for the murder.

A grand jury voted in 1999 to indict parents of six-year-old Ramon Jontontyard on charges of child abuse that resulted in death, but later Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter did not sign the indictment. Various sources, including the jury members, have confirmed to Daily Camera that Hunter refused to sign an indictment that believed he could not prove the case without hesitation.

On July 9, 2008 - nearly 12 years after the death of their daughter and two years after Patsy's death - Boulder District Attorney frees John Ramsey and his late wife from any mistakes in the death of their daughter. The decision was based on new DNA evidence collected from JonBenÃÆ' © t clothes. This type of special DNA analysis does not exist at the time of the murder. Boulder County Attorney Mary Lacy said the new DNA test refers to "an unexplained third party" as a possible liability for the killing. The modern "DNA touch" shows that a man of Hispanic origin (per DNA and DNA update found beneath JonBen's nails two weeks after Hunter's hunted murder) left a trail on two different clothing articles: panties and leggings. This is done against normal practice and police still believe they are not cleared of all charges. (Mark Beckner, retired Chief of Boulder Police, has claimed that Mary Lacy always strongly believes that a mother is unlikely to be responsible for the death of her daughter in such a way [and so attempts to free Ramsey], and that "DNA traces" are found in JonBenà cel  © t [trusted by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to be "sweat or saliva"] in very small amounts [nanograms] that it could come from a "clothing manufacturing process".

In October 2016, a new forensic analysis found that the original DNA actually contained a genetic marker from two individuals other than the victim himself, JonBenÃÆ'Â © t.
