William (Bill) A. Barton is an American lawyer in the state of Oregon. As a lawyer and personal injury writer, he successfully argued to allow litigation to proceed against the Vatican in the priests sex scandal, despite the sovereign immunity that normally applies to foreign governments. This is the first court in the United States that allows the Vatican to be prosecuted.
Bill's son, Brent Barton, was elected to the Oregon Representative Council in November 2008.

Bill Barton graduated from Pacific University, in Forest Grove, Oregon, with a Bachelor of Science in 1969. He went to law school in Salem, Oregon at Willamette University College of Law, graduating with JD in 1972.
Barton is a member of the faculty of the Oregon Law Institute. OLI, at Lewis & amp; Clark College's law school in Portland, is a center of continuing legal education (CLE). Barton also teaches several law courses for the Professional Education Group including, Art of the Conference Room, Advanced Jury Selection, and Alternative Dispute Settlement.

For several years, Barton represented a plaintiff against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Portland and Reverend Maurice Grammond for claims of child molestation. The $ 135 million lawsuit helped drive the diocese to file bankruptcy in 2004, and delayed the case until 2006. Previously, Barton won a case in Oregon against the Agricultural Children's School, and the Oregon Trail Council and Boy Scouts of America about sexual harassment claims. In 1994, he served as a mediator in a civil settlement between former Oregon governor Neil Goldschmidt and his sexual abuse victim.
In 2005, the Oregon Trial Lawyers' Association named Barton as a Distinguished Trial Lawyer. Partners in Barton & amp; Strever, PC in Newport was named Super Lawyers Top 50 for Oregon based on research & law & amp; Politics magazine for 2006. Barton successfully sued Rajneesh movement leaders.
