Family law (also called law of marriage or law of domestic relations ) is a legal area that concerns family matters and household relationships.

Subjects commonly included in the state family law include:
- Marriage, civil union, and domestic partnership:
- Log into legally-recognized and spousal relationships
- Legal and additional legal family termination, including divorce, cancellation, property settlement, benefits, child custody and visitation, child support and welfare benefits
- Adoption: the process of adopting a child and, in some cases, an adult.
- Substitutes: law and birthing process as surrogate mother
- Child protection process: litigation that may result from state intervention in cases of child abuse and child abandonment
- Child law: Matters relating to minors include status violations, misbehavior, emancipation, and adolescent adjudication
- Paternity: the process for establishing and separating paternity, and paternity testing administration

Legal conflict
Problems may arise in family law where there is a question of jurisdictional law applicable to marital relations or for detention and divorce, and whether divorce or parenting orders are recognized under the laws of other jurisdictions. For child custody, many countries have joined the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abductions to give recognition to the orders of detainees of other member states and to avoid the issue of parental abduction.
