SLC Punk! is an American comedy-drama 1998 film written and directed by James Merendino. The film tells the story of a young punk rock fan Steven "Stevo" Levy, a college graduate living in Salt Lake City. This character is described as a stereotype of punk vandalis in the mid-1980s. Many of the events and characters in the film are allegedly based on real life, though they may be over-inflated.
Stevo's character is based on the life of writer/director James Merendino, although the character is named after Stephen Egerton, originally known as Stephen "Stevo" O'Reilly, who plays for the punk band Massacre Guys Saltac City, and eventually joins the band LA Descendents and ALL. SLC Punk was chosen as the night opening feature at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.
Merendino created the film based on his growing experience in Salt Lake City. Although the film is not autobiographical, Merendino says that many characters are based on people he knows.

Plot
The film describes the daily life of two punks in Salt Lake City, Utah in the fall of 1985: Stevo and his best friend, Bob's "Heroin"; Stevo tells the movie. The nickname "Heroin" is ironic, because Bob is afraid of needles and truly believes that any medication (with the exception of alcohol and cigarettes) is inherently dangerous.
Stevo and Bob went from party to party while living in a dilapidated apartment. They spend much of their time fighting with other subculture members, especially rednecks. Stevo has a regular relationship with a girl named Sandy, while Heroin Bob falls in love with Trish, the manager of a head store, but is reluctant to ask her to be his girlfriend.
They are both shaped by their experience with their parents. Stevo's parents, now divorced, are ex-hippies proud of their young business; However, Stevo was rebelled by what he regarded as their "sale" by becoming a prosperous Republican Rep., Who they weakly tried to justify. Stevo's values ââwere excellent, and when his father - a lawyer with Porsche and a tendency for younger women - sent applications to Harvard Law School and Stevo accepted, he still refused them for his beliefs. Instead, Bob's father was a paranoid, drunk guy who made the mistake of blaming his son and his friend for the Central Intelligence Agency agent, and drove them with a rifle when they visited him on his birthday.
Stevo began to see a weakness in living a punk life. Sean, a fellow punk, is a drug dealer who once tried to stab his mother while under the influence of a whole 100-dose acid sheet, before being taken away by the police; Stevo then finds him screwing up the streets with some obvious mental problems.
While Stevo understands that his relationship with Sandy is relaxed, he is still angry when he finds him having sex with another man, and cruelly beats him, then hates himself for his actions contrary to his own belief in anarchism. The social circle began to drift away, when Mike left Salt Lake City to attend the University of Notre Dame. Stevo falls in love with a rich young girl named Brandy (Summer Phoenix), who shows that his anarchist dress and attitudes are more of a fashion choice than a true political philosophy. Instead of being offended, Stevo takes the critic seriously and they passionately kiss.
At the same party, Bob Heroin complained of a headache (caused by Spandau Ballet's "She Loved Like Diamond" playing on the stereo), and was given Percodan, which he consumed after being told the pills were just "vitamins" that would help his headache. An accidental drug overdose kills him in his sleep, apparently justifying his reluctance to the chemicals he previously embraced in the criticism presented to Stevo. When Stevo discovers that his best friend is dead, he is completely destroyed. At the funeral, he appears with his head shaved and changed his clothes, and decides that he's done with his punk lifestyle. He decides to go to Harvard, and suggests in the narrative that he married Brandy. He notes in his closing narrative that his young self may be kicking his ass for the future, with a crybab at portraying himself as the spearhead.
The "Tribes"
The film features several gangs that are presented as "tribes." The film focuses primarily on the punk tribe, but includes some others as well:
- Punks: Stevo, Bob, Sean, Megan, and Mike are included in this tribe, even though Mike is not wearing that role. The bastards are rival mods, Nazis and rednecks.
- Mods: Mods wear suits and ties, and they drive a scooter. They are generally rivals of punk, but the character John the Mod acts as a freestanding diplomat among tribes. At the beginning of the film, the mod tried to buy acid from Sean.
- Redneck: Redneck is a rural Utah resident who wears driver and flannel hats, and goes around in a big truck. Punks hates them for their conservative views.
- Neo-Nazis: Neo-Nazis are white skinheads dressed in military uniforms and Nazi armor. Punks and mod are shown to be predators against the Nazis.
- The Heavy metal Guys: They have long hair and flannels. Not much is known about them, except that Stevo explains that they are predators of the New Wavers.
- New style: They are people who dress like New Romantics and are said to be at least threatening the tribes. They are described as "new hippies." Each Tribe is a predator of New Wavers.

- Many street scenes outside the building take place north of Frank E. Moss Federal Court Building in the city center.

Merendino said of the sequel, "I made SLC Punk! when I was a kid, and therefore, the story is naive , and, since it's only a story about age, it's not done yet.The character faces a big question, 18 years later, as an outsider, punk rocker... What relevance do they have in the world where all the statements In the years since I made > SLC Punk! , has found a rather large and supportive follower who has been very kind to me, so in making the sequel, I feel indebted to those guys to do it right. "
