Dismissal of the U.S. lawyer controversy
Heffelfinger resigned on February 28, 2006, for personal reasons, and he was replaced by Rachel Paulose. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that it was unusual that "former US lawyer for Minnesota, Thomas Heffelfinger, was not invited" to the inauguration ceremony of Paulose. Paulose spokeswoman Jeanne Cooney said, "This is a public event. Anyone who wants to go can go." This article speculates that Heffelfinger, a moderate Republican, could be a candidate for dismissal if he does not step aside to make way for a more conservative candidate.
Heffelfinger is angry at the Justice Department for targeting him for being fired for his busy work with Indian affairs. Heffelfinger strongly defended the work: "The fact that some officials or officials suspected of being responsible in Washington on Mainstream Justice now believe that I should have been deleted because spending too much time focusing on Native American public safety is outrageous, and that's a shame."
Indirect evidence suggests that Heffelfinger was subjected to dismissal as a consequence of his position on a tribal election in Minnesota. Heffelfinger's appearance on the list of potential dismissals at the Justice Department appears to fit the pattern that links fired lawyers and voting issues. The names of Bradley Schlozman and Hans A. von Spakovsky also appear in this case; Schlozman is a central figure in the electoral controversy and election in Missouri.
Personal practice
After his resignation as US Attorney, Heffelfinger was hired by Best law firm and Flanagan, where he focused on white-collar criminal defense and American Indian law.
