Dennis William Quaid (born April 9, 1954) is an American actor known for his dramatic and comedic roles. The first gained widespread attention in the 1980s, some notable credits include Breaking Away (1979), The Right Stuff (1983), Wyatt Earp ( 1994), The Parent Trap (1998), Frequency (2000), The Rookie (2002), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), Vantage Point (2008), Footloose (2011), and Soul Surfer (2011). For his role in Away from Heaven (2002) he won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor among other awards.

Dennis William Quaid was born in Houston, Texas, son of Juanita B. "Nita" Quaid, a real estate agent, and William Rudy Quaid, an electrician. Quaid has British, Irish, Scottish-Irish, and Cajun (French) descent, He attended Paul W. Horn Primary School in Bellaire, and Pershing Middle School in Houston. He studied Mandarin and danced at Bellaire High School in Bellaire, Texas, and later at college, at the University of Houston, under drama coach Cecil Pickett, who previously taught at Bellaire High and whose daughter is actress Cindy Pickett. and raised in Baptist faith. She is the younger brother of actor Randy Quaid.

Quaid quit the University of Houston before graduating and moved to Hollywood to pursue an acting career. She initially had trouble finding work but began to get attention when she appeared in Breaking Away (1979) and got good reviews for her role as Gordon Cooper astronaut in The Right Stuff (1983).
Known for his smile, Quaid has appeared in comedic and dramatic roles. Quaid has starred roles in the film Jaws 3-D (1983), Enemy Mine (1985), Innerspace (1987) and The Big Easy (1987). He also gained praise for his role as Jerry Lee Lewis in the Great Balls of Fire! (1989). In 1989, he also appeared in the entire Bonnie Raitt music video for the song "Thing Called Love."
Quaid's career lost his temper in the early 1990s, after he fought anorexia nervosa occurred when he lost £ 40 to play Doc Holliday tuberculosis that was stricken with the disease at Wyatt Earp and recovered from cocaine addiction. He continues to collect positive reviews in various movies, however. Quaid also guested from episode 2 season Muppets Tonight (1997). He starred in the lead role in the 1996 adventure film Dragonheart, the remake of The Parent Trap (1998), plays the role of the twin dad, and as an aging football pro quarterback at Oliver Stone < i> Any Given Sunday (1999). In 1998, he made his debut as a film director with Everything That Rises a western television movie in which he also starred.
Some of the newer Quaid movie credits include Frequency (2000), The Rookie (2002), Away from Heaven (2002), Cold Creek Manor (2003), The Flight of the Phoenix (2004), Alamo (2004), In Good Company 2004), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), Yours, Mine and Us (2005), Vantage Point (2008), GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), and Pandorum (2009).
In 2009, guest star Quaid starred in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants , portraying his grandfather. Krabs, Captain Redbeard.
He described US President Bill Clinton, along with Michael Sheen as Tony Blair and Hope Davis as Hillary Clinton, in the 2010 movie The Special Relationship.
In 2012 and 2013, Quaid plays Sheriff Ralph Lamb on the CBS TV drama series Vegas .
In 2017, he starred in A Dog's Purpose as Ethan, billed as a "celebration of the special relationship between humans and their dogs".
In 2018, Quaid starred in I Can Only Imagine , in which he plays the role of Arthur Millard, singer and songwriter Bart Millard.
In March 2018, confirmed by director Sean McNamara that Quaid will portray President Ronald Reagan in his upcoming biopic, titled  Reagan . The film is scheduled for release in summer 2019.

Relationships and children
Quaid has been married three times and has three children.
Quaid and his first wife, actress P. J. Soles, married on November 25, 1978. The couple divorced in 1983.
On February 14, 1991, Quaid married actress Meg Ryan. Quaid and Ryan fall in love while filming their second movie together, D.O.A. Quaid and Ryan have a son, Jack Henry (born April 24, 1992). They announced their separation on June 28, 2000, saying they had been separated six weeks at the time. Their divorce was settled on July 16, 2001. Ryan later revealed to Inytyle Quaid has been unfaithful to her for a long time when they got married.
Quaid dated model Shanna Moakler in 2001. They were together when she was approached by Playboy, and they discussed her before she posed naked in the magazine. The relationship lasted for eight months.
Quaid married Texas real estate agent, Kimberly Buffington, on July 4, 2004, at his ranch in Paradise Valley, Montana. They have fraternal twins, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, born through a substitute on November 8, 2007, in Santa Monica, California.
On November 18, 2007, hospital staff mistakenly gave twins ten days of Quaid a dose of 1,000 times the usual dose of heparin for infants. Their lawyers say the newborn baby will be "okay now," but Quaid filed a lawsuit against drugmaker Baxter Healthcare claiming that packaging for two doses of heparin is not quite different. In May 2008, Quaids testified before the US House Committee on Government Oversight and Reform, asking the US Congress not to precede the right to prosecute drug manufacturers for negligence under state law. This incident caused Quaid to become a patient safety advocate, producing a series of documentary films about preventable medical errors that aired on the Discovery Channel and co-authored a medical journal article that discussed the positive effects of the patient's story in motivating changes in health care. The first documentary, Chasing Zero: Winning the War on Dangerous Health, aired on the Discovery Channel in 2010, and the second documentary, Exploring Tsunami Health: Bring Your Best Boards, on the Discovery Channel in 2012.
Buffington filed for divorce from Quaid in March 2012. According to the divorce petition, the marriage became "helpless because of a dispute or personality conflict." Buffington's lawyer then withdrew divorce papers on April 26, 2012. In the summer of 2012, Quaid and Buffington moved to California. In October 2012, Quaid and Buffington again decided to split up, and Buffington filed a lawsuit, seeking joint legal protection and the only physical custody of the twins. After waiting to establish the six-month residency required in California, Quaid filed for divorce on Nov. 30, 2012, demanded legal and physical custody rights with the children and offered to pay husband and wife support to Buffington. They then reconciled and the divorce was dismissed in September 2013. On June 28, 2016, the couple announced in a joint statement that they were divorced, with Kimberly Quaid calling for physical custody and joint legal custody.
Interests
In addition to acting, Quaid is a musician and plays with his band, Shark. He wrote and performed the song "Closer to You" in The Big Easy movie (1987). Quaid also has a pilot license and has Cessna Citation. He is also a one-handicap golfer, and in 2005, he was named the top golfer among "Hollywood set" by Golf Digest magazine.
Quaid is a fan of AL's Houston Astros, and after the 2005 National League Championship Championship team season, he narrated the release of their DVD warning. After filming The Express: The Ernie Davis Story , Quaid went to the Cleveland Browns Stadium to dedicate Davis jersey.
Use of substance
There are many stories about cocaine abuse by Quaid. In a 2002 interview with Larry King on his talk show, after King asked about his motives for using drugs, Quaid replied, "Well, you have to put it in context. Back in the late 1960s, early 1970s It's back during the time , You know, drugs will broaden our mind and everyone experiments and everything.We are really getting taller, we do not know it.And cocaine at that time is considered harmless.You know.I remember the magazine article in 'People' Magazine , doctors say, it does not make it addictive.It's just - alcohol is worse so I think we all fall into that but not that way. "When asked if he believed he had ever been addicted to drugs, he replied," That is but that comes to the point where I can not have fun unless I have it.That's a bad place to be. "Later in the interview, he said," But I see I die for five years if I do not stop. "    
Charities
Quaid lends his name to the annual "Dennis Quaid Charity Weekend" (formerly "Jiffy Lube/Dennis Quaid Charity Classic"), held in Austin from 2002 to 2007. The golf tournament attracts many celebrities with results shared amongst the local children's charities.
Quaid works at International Children's Hospital in New Orleans. He made several trips to Central America in the nineties to help build a medical clinic and transport sick children back to the US for treatments they could not get locally.    
Accolades
For his role in  Away from Heaven  (2002) he won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor, Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor, Film Society Criticism Award for Best Supporting Actor and Award Independent Spirit for Best Supporting Men. He received nominations for Best Supporting Actor from the Golden Globe Awards, the Phoenix Film Film Critics Award and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Quaid also received a Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater, University of Houston, in April 2012.
