Property damage (or, in England and Wales criminal damage ) is damage to or destruction of public or private property, caused by someone who is not the owner or by natural phenomena. Damage to property caused by people is generally categorized by the cause: negligence (including errors of control and human), and intentional damage. Accidental property damage is often, but not always, dangerous. Damage to property caused by natural phenomena can be legally attributed to a person if the person's negligence is allowed for damage to occur.

Intent

Deliberate property damage can be thought of as a form of violence, though usually (but not always) less reprehensible than violence that physically harms other living beings. For example, letting a pacemaker fail or a well being poisoned may qualify as property damage and cause damage to the body. On the same note, certain forms of property damage can prevent damage to the body, such as breaking parts of a machine that will injure someone. Some argue that property damage signifies a willingness to do physical damage or intimidate the flow of free communication in political or economic debates. Mohandas Gandhi is this opinion.

Classification

The term vandalism is often used synonymously with intentional property damage, although the term is often associated with superficial or aesthetic damage, such as vandalism. When property damage is done for the purpose of intimidating government or society in general, it can be categorized as terrorism. In some contexts, the relationship between these terms is politicized. For example, the Earth Liberation Front has claimed responsibility for a number of property damage incidents, but claims have never endangered living beings, and in fact have doctrines that prohibit members from doing so. However, the Federal Bureau of Investigation classifies them as a group of "terrorists" prominently because they send political and ideological messages with this destruction. Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense limits the term "terrorist" to groups that actually harm the body.

Property damage tactics in the labor movement, peace and environment

Property damage tactics have become part of the labor movement, the peace movement, the ecological movement, the environmental movement and the anti-globalization movement, among others. The infrastructure capital of loggers, miners, fishermen, suburban housing developers, mass media, entrepreneurs who were targeted by strikes, and even police forces were targeted. Targeted properties, in many cases with the exception of labor acts, tend to be those that are thought to cause or threaten some form of damage to living things. Common examples include Greenpeace's sabotage of bulldozers, peaceful movement activists entering the NATO base by breaking the fence, and liberating the Liberation Front against new empty homes they deem enforcing in the Arizona wilderness.
