The California Attorney General is the state attorney general of the California Government. The job of the officer is to ensure that "state law is enforced uniformly and adequately" (California Constitution, Article V, Section 13). The AGO runs office responsibilities through the California Department of Justice. The department employs more than 1,100 lawyers (which means that AG oversees the government's supervision of law firms much larger than most US private law firms) and 3,700 non-lawyers.
The California Attorney General is elected for a four-year term, with a maximum of two terms. Elections are held in the same statewide election as Governors, Lieutenant Governors, Supervisors, State Secretaries, Treasurers, Supervisors of Public Instruction, and Insurance Commissioners.

History
Although the Office of the Attorney General dated to the California acceptance to the Union, the office was in modern form dated to Proposition 4 of 1934, sponsored by the District Courts of Alameda County Earl Warren as one of four initiatives he sponsored for substantially reforming law enforcement and judiciary. Previously, the attorney general had no jurisdiction over matters in the jurisdiction of the district attorney and the locally elected sheriff. Warren later became its own Attorney General in 1938 where he rearranged state law enforcement into the district.
