James Joseph Hamula born November 20, 1957) is an American lawyer and former authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
Following the disciplinary action of the church by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Hamula was freed from his calling as general authority and excommunicated from the LDS Church on 8 August 2017.

Hamula's father was Joseph Hamula, son of a Hungarian immigrant who grew up in the Hungarian speaking area of ââthe Cleveland, Ohio metro. After a naval service, Joseph Hamula attended Southern California where he joined the LDS Church. At the urging of its stake president, Howard W. Hunter, Joseph served as a missionary in the Swiss-Austrian Church Mission.

Biography
Hamula was born and raised in Long Beach, California. He then served as a missionary of the LDS Church in the German Mission of Munich. After his mission, he received a bachelor's degree in political science and philosophy, a master's degree in political philosophy, and a juris doctorate, all from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
During one summer while studying law, Hamula did an internship in Mesa, Arizona. There he met Joyce Anderson, and in 1984 they were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple. They are the parents of six children.
Hamula has spent most of her career working for Gallagher & amp; Kennedy. He is mostly involved in Superfund and other environmental law issues.
LDS Church service
At the LDS Church, Hamula serves as the elders quorum president, bishop, stake high councilor, and stake Young Men president. He also served as Mesa Arizona's Salt River Stake president and as Mesa Arizona's first Red Mountain Stake president when it was organized in 1992.
From 1994 to 1997, Hamula was president of the Washington D.C. Mission. church. From 2000 to 2008, Hamula is a seventy area in the North American Area of ââthe Church. He became a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy during the April 2008 general conference of the church. After serving first as a counselor in the area, from 2011 to 2014 he served as president of the Pacific Area Church based in Auckland, New Zealand.
On August 8, 2017, Hamula was ostracized from the church. When the church news broadcast did not specify the reason for excommunication, he declared that it was not the result of personal apostasy or disappointment on the part of Hamula. Hamula was the first general authority of the LDS Church that was ostracized since George P. Lee in 1989.
