The New Jersey attorney of New Jersey is a member of the state executive cabinet and oversees the Department of Law and Public Security. This office was appointed by the Governor of New Jersey, confirmed by the New Jersey Senate, and a limited run. Under the terms of the New Jersey State Constitution, the Attorney General serves a concurrent four-year period for the governor. Gurbir Grewal was nominated as Attorney General by Governor Phil Murphy. Grewal is the first Sikh supreme attorney in the United States.
Conventional wisdom is that the Attorney General can not be removed from office except "by cause" by the Governor or by means of legislative impeachment.
This is the fifth in line of succession after the Governor of New Jersey Lieutenant, President of the New Jersey Senate, and Chairman of the New Jersey General Assembly. The Attorney General can not function as Lieutenant Governor.
