Jere Wood (born c. 1949) is a former mayor of Roswell, Georgia, who serves five consecutive terms. Mayor Wood defeated Democratic Party "Pug" Mabry, who served as mayor for over thirty years, in the 1997 election. During his election he ran on a platform of slow growth, fighting urban sprawl and what he saw as a negative side effect. At that time, he promised to only become mayor twice. He ran an unrivaled and guaranteed re-election in 2001. Wood was Roy's son "Splinter" Wood, a Democrat, who was the US Under-Secretary of State (DOI) during the Carter Administration in the 1970s. Wood won the mayoral race again in an election held in November 2005.

Mayor Wood is a member of the Butors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, an organization formed in 2006 and chaired by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston mayor Thomas Menino.

Surat ke FCC

During the merger efforts of Comcast and Time Warner Cable, a number of politicians sent a letter to the FCC to declare their support. Wood is one of them, declaring the merger will help spur business growth. It was later discovered that Wood had actually sent a letter ghostly written by Comcast. Wood is just one of a number of politicians exposed by The Verge to participate in such practices.

Deadline

In 2016, Roswell resident Michael Litten filed a lawsuit accusing Wood of violating the Roswell charter by seeking a third term as mayor. Wood, who was first elected in 1997, advocated in 2010 for the mayor of Roswell to have a three-year time limit of four years. He said his goal was that the clock would start for him when the law was passed, and not when he was first elected.

Although Wood has enjoyed the support of Country Representative Betty Price, he has stated that he has no intention of changing the charter to allow Wood to run for the next term. He has been willing to support a charter change that will allow the mayor to serve his tenure, but no more. "My goal is to save the city with expensive trial costs," Price said. Since the inception of the controversy, the city of Roswell has spent $ 16,843 through the cost of a city attorney to defend Wood, by mid 2016. On 3 August 2017, Wood was expelled from office after a judge found him in violation of municipal law.

Suit against Roswell

In October 2016, Wood filed a lawsuit in Fulton High Court against Roswell and a Roswell Board Member about whether he could renovate his home. Wood's home is located in the historic district of Roswell, which demanded prior approval when renovating. He was initially granted approval by the Roswell History Conservation Commission to build a 1.5, 3,000 square foot story at his home. However, the city council subsequently overturned the decision in August 2016. The alleged wood in the lawsuit that the council members acted incorrectly by deciding the council has the legal authority to reverse the commission's previous decision. The state's historic preservation law allows "limited authority" for councilors to "approve, modify and approve, or reject" the final decision of the historic commission, but only if it is found that the commission misuses its policy.
