The sexual harassment scandal in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles covered the documented events of the 1930s, but most of the publicity was linked to the events of the 1970s to the 1990s. Priests accused of harassing children or adults in the parish are usually transferred, without informing new parishes against them, as the church protects its staff. Policy changes occurred, a dozen priests were dismissed in 2002, the church issued an apology and detailed report in 2004, and in 2007, the Archdiocese reached a settlement with 508 victims of $ 660 million, recordbreaking amount.

A challenging aspect of the sexual harassment investigation

Although Cardinal Roger Mahony released a detailed report in 2004 on many cases of abuse in the archdiocese, he declined to release notes about additional priests whose documentation had not been collected during the investigation. Under his leadership, the Archdiocese appealed for efforts by the Los Angeles County District Attorney to gain access to church documents related to sexual harassment to the US Supreme Court. The court refused to hear the call.

In 2006, the decision required the archdiocese to comply with a subpoena from the Los Angeles County Attorney Office for letters to former priests and notes from church counseling sessions.

Settlement

In July 2007, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles completed 508 cases for $ 2 million. On July 16, 2007, the day before he testified under oath, Mahony and the Roman Catholic Church in Los Angeles apologized for the offenses committed by the priests after 508 victims reached a record-breaking $ 660m (£ 324m) deal, on average $ 1.3 million for each plaintiff. Mahony described harassment as "horrible sin and evil", as a series of trials of sexual harassment claims since the 1940s began. The agreement, if approved by a judge, will complete all 15 upcoming pedophilia trials against the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and avoid the threat of Mahony being forced to testify of how the Church faced offenses in the 1940s and 1990s.

Since 2002 nearly 1,000 people have filed sexual harassment claims in California. The archdiocese agreed to pay $ 60 million to settle 45 lawsuits still facing more than two pending sexual assault cases. According to the Associated Press, a total of 22 priests are mentioned in the settlements, with cases occurring as far back as the 1930s. 20 million dollars from this is paid by the archdiocesan insurance company.

Rita Milla

Rita Milla, an American citizen who was sexually abused by seven priests as a girl and a young adult, was paid $ 500,000 (EUR339.190) settlement on December 4, 2007, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Los Angeles, as a result of her Legal fight 23 year. Milla, 46, is one of the plaintiffs in a $ 660-million-dollar global settlement (EUR447.73 million) paid by the diocese who had been victimized by past priests in the past. At 16, he was first abused by Father. Santiago Tamayo in Los Angeles. He said the failure of the Roman Catholic Church to help him caused him to lose faith: "It feels like God hangs up the phone to me I will never get out of memory and I will always resist the effects after the trauma I faced through, but now I can work on healing. "He sued the church in 1984, and Tamayo apologized to him in 1991. Tamayo, who died in 1999, was paid by the church to remain in the Philippines.

Effects on the diocese

On January 22, 2008, Tod Tamberg announced that the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles had sold the Catholic Archdiocese's 12-storey Catholic Center to Wilson Boulevard to Jamison Properties of Los Angeles for $ 31 million to raise funds to finance $ 660 million in 2007. sex harassment by the pastor. The building was donated in 1995 by Thrifty PayLess.
