The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys ( CIPA ) is the professional body of British patent attorney. Founded in 1882 as the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents and established by Royal Charter in 1891. The institution was renamed in June 2006.
The aim is to raise awareness, and strong confidence in the British Intellectual Property profession and to represent the interests of about 3,000 of its members, of which 1700 are Registered Patent Lawyers, qualified by professional examinations.
Another long-established CIPA goal is professional arrangement. In 2010, CIPA and the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA) established Intellectual Property Rule Board (IPReg) to jointly organize Patent and Trademark lawyers' attorneys.
CIPA manages List of Patent Agents under the legal authority on behalf of the Department for Innovation, University and Skills and reports to the Patent-General's Controller, Trademark and Design in the Office of Intellectual Property of the United Kingdom.
