The Bronx Defenders is a public defender's office located in the New York City South Bronx neighborhood. In Defender of the Bronx, criminal defense lawyers work with civilian lawyers, family defense lawyers, immigration lawyers, non-lawyers lawyers, social workers, and investigators to help their clients cope with the various legal and social issues that criminal prosecution can cause. The Bronx Defender is a public defender contracted for New York City, along with the Legal Aid Institute, the New York Defense Services in Manhattan, Brooklyn Defender Services in Brooklyn, Queens Law Associates in Queens, and the Environmental Defense Service in northern Manhattan.
Founded in 1997 by a team of eight supporters, including its executive director Robin Steinberg, David Feige, and criminal defense lawyer Daniel Arshack, the Bronx Defense is responsible for developing a holistic defense, an interdisciplinary model of criminal defense lawyers. The Bronx Defenders also hosted The Bronx Freedom Fund, the first charity guarantee organization in New York State. In recent years, the Bronx Defenders have received national attention and praise for their work providing holistic protection for the Bronx poor, including National Legal Aid & Defender Association Clara Shortridge Foltz Award.
As early as 2016, the office has 250 jobs in it.
