Professional career

Brent decided to enter the NFL after he decided academically not qualified to play his senior season. Because he missed the filing deadline for regular drafts, he was eligible to apply for an additional draft in 2010 and was taken in the seventh round by the Dallas Cowboys, who has not compiled a list of such players since 1995. As a novice, he surprised the observer by making the team, though he was limited in the early part of the training camp with his damaged left hand. During the season, he is given about 15 games per game and posted 17 tackles.

He received his first career starting in 2012 and became strong as a key player in defense, while replacing injured Jay Ratliff. On December 8, 2012, he turned his car on Texas State Highway 114 at 2:21 am while driving under the influence, killing his passengers, his colleague and Cowboys teammate Jerry Brown. The accident happened one day before playing against the Cincinnati Bengals, which is a game with playoff implications for both sides and that the Bengals have been well liked. Head coach Jason Garrett told the team about the incident when they were on a plane to fly to Cincinnati.

That Saturday, the players held an emotional encounter and hung their Brent and Brown jerseys in their locker room. Cowboys won the 20-19 game. Brent was then placed on the list of spare/non-football diseases after being indicted for the death of Jerry Brown.

For Brown's funeral, Stacey Jackson (Brown's mother) in an attitude of support, asks Brent to meet with the family at the airport and sit with them at the event. The next game against Pittsburgh Steelers, he was invited by his team-mates to sit on the Cowboys side. After hearing how his presence was felt by CBS Sports commentators doing games and social networking sites, he approached the Cowboys staff and excused himself for the second round. After the incident, the NFL and the team did not allow him to be on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

Brent announced his resignation on July 18, 2013, to focus on off-field issues related to drunken murder charges. After serving his sentence in prison and undergoing a rehabilitation process, he was restored by the NFL after a 10-match suspension. On November 11, 2014, he was enabled from the team's reserve list/team backup list. Due to the time he misses himself from the game, he is not in the form of playing and it takes until the 12th week to get back to the action game. After being active in three games as a reserve player, he will miss the last four games with a calf injury. He enrolled two tackles and played an average of 20 snaps in each of the Cowboys playoff contests.

Brent was placed on the reserve/pensions list on May 8, 2015. Per head coach Jason Garrett, "Brent focused more on his life away from football, we were impressed with how he recovered, and hoped he progressed well." On September 25, 2015, the Dallas Cowboys announced that Brent had accepted a position in their scouting department.

Legal issues

Brent pleaded guilty to allegations of driving under influence on June 2, 2009, as a result of the incident from the previous February. He was sentenced to two-year trial and 60 days in prison. He also fined a number of confidential orders and was ordered to undergo 200 hours of community service.

On December 8, 2012, Brent was accused of murder poisoning in Irving, Texas, after a motor vehicle accident, where he was the driver, killing his teammate, Jerry Brown. Police documents show that Brent was driving at least 110 miles per hour (180 km/h) and may have been driving as fast as 134 mph (216 km/h) just before the accident, on the road where the posted speed limit was 45 mph (72 km/hour). Brent subsequently failed a test of tranquility and would face two to 20 years in prison if found guilty. Brent was found by police to attract friends and teammates. Jerry Brown's mother begged the Cowboys to keep Brent as a teammate and not to forget it.

On December 26, 2012, the jury sued Brent on one count of murder poisoning. On May 24, 2013, Dallas district attorney was asked to revoke Brent's guarantees for disobeying monitoring conditions and sending him to jail pending trial. The judge rejected the request and ordered additional forms of monitoring.

He was sent back to prison on June 27, 2013, after it was revealed that he had failed a drug test on June 19. Prior to this, he also failed another drug test in late May, testing positive for marijuana both times. He was released from prison for a court order on 7 July 2013. On January 24, 2014, Brent was found guilty of murder of poisonings in the death of Jerry Brown and sentenced to 180 days in prison and 10 years probation.
